Veins of Life Watershed Society and Dead Boats Disposal Society protect and restore the Salish Sea through cleanup, habitat restoration, pollution research, abandoned-vessel removal, youth training and public education. Our work began on the Gorge Waterway in 1994 and has grown across southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Our success belongs to the volunteers, supporters, First Nations, tradespeople, scientists and communities who stand up for salmon, orcas and healthy waters.

- Veins of Life Watershed Society and the Dead Boats Disposal Society are community organizations protecting and restoring the Salish Sea. Our work began in 1994, when John Roe and his son Wesley started removing garbage from the Gorge Waterway in a small rowboat. That effort grew into decades of restoration, youth training, pollution investigation, shoreline cleanup and abandoned-vessel removal. Our work now reaches beyond the Gorge to Victoria Harbour, Esquimalt Harbour, Juan de Fuca, the Gulf Islands and southern Vancouver Island. We document stormwater pollution, failing sewer infrastructure, contaminated sediments, endocrine disruptors, habitat loss and damage caused by abandoned boats and marine debris. Everything is connected: streets drain to outfalls, outfalls contaminate sediment, sediment affects forage fish and juvenile salmon, and Chinook feed Southern Resident orcas. Source control, intertidal habitat protection and enforcement remain central to our work. Our success belongs to volunteers, First Nations, tradespeople, businesses, scientists, young people and supporters who stood beside us. We continue because the Salish Sea cannot defend itself. People must do that.

Ode to Island Health: Because… Ahhh… Because - Why you can never get an answer from Island Heath about swimming in contaminated waters
Ode to Island Health: Because… Ahhh… Because
O Island Health,
guardian of public health,
keeper of the test kit,
master of the carefully limited answer.
You test for yesterday’s danger
with yesterday’s tools
and call it modern protection.
Bacteria.
Always bacteria.
Because bacteria are easy.

The story of the Veins of Life Watershed Society, the Dead Boats Disposal Society, and the volunteers who refused to accept that polluted waters were beyond repair
More than thirty years ago, a father and his young son climbed into a small rowboat on Victoria’s Gorge Waterway and started pulling garbage from the water.

Ode to the Mayor of the Rising Sewage
A Retirement Tribute from the Gorge
O Mayor Desjardins,
long seated upon Esquimalt’s municipal throne,
long enough to watch the pipes grow old,
the buildings grow tall,
and the sewage rise faithfully
with every winter rain.
